The best temperature for sleep, and why your room fights you on it

Most sleep research points to roughly 60–67°F (15–19°C), with around 65°F a common sweet spot. But the ideal is not one number. It is a curve that changes through the night, and a flat thermostat setting works against both ends of it.

Short answer: aim for a bedroom in the low-to-mid 60s Fahrenheit at bedtime, let it be coolest in the first half of the night, and let it drift a couple of degrees warmer in the hours before you wake. If you run hot, lean toward the bottom of the range. If you are over 60, lean slightly warmer in late night and pre-wake.

Why temperature controls sleep

To fall asleep and reach deep sleep, your core body temperature has to drop. That drop is one of the signals your body uses to move from wakefulness into light sleep and on into the deeper, restorative stages. It is driven by the circadian clock and helped along by heat leaving through the skin of your hands and feet.

Before waking, core temperature rises again, nudging you toward lighter sleep and eventually wakefulness. So across one night the body traces a shallow U: down going in, lowest early, back up toward morning.

A bedroom held at one temperature all night is out of sync with that U. If it is warm enough to be comfortable at 4 a.m., it is too warm to help you fall asleep. If it is cool enough to help you fall asleep, it is often too cold by 4 a.m., which is when people wake up shivering or tangled in the covers.

Early in the night, cooler air helps your core temperature fall and supports deep sleep, which is concentrated in the first half of the night. As morning approaches, a gradual warm-up matches the body's own rise. The best result does not come from finding one magic number and holding it. Adjusting for you

  • Hot sleepers: start at the bottom of the range and make sure the room is cooling as you fall asleep, not just cold. Guide for hot sleepers.
  • Age 60 and over: thermoregulation changes with age, and many older adults do better with late night and pre-wake a degree or so warmer.
