What ecobee sleep mode actually does
In the ecobee app, "Sleep" is one of three default comfort settings, alongside "Home" and "Away." Each one is a target temperature (or a heat and cool pair) plus a set of room sensors to use for averaging. When your schedule transitions to the Sleep period, the thermostat switches to that target and those sensors.
That is the whole feature. There is no overnight curve, no phased cooldown, no pre-wake warm-up. It is one number from the time you go to bed until the next comfort setting kicks in, usually "Home" in the morning.
Why one temperature is not enough
Core body temperature drops as you fall asleep, bottoms out during deep sleep, then rises toward morning. A room held at one number all night is out of sync with both ends of that curve. The result is familiar: you fall asleep fine, overheat during deep sleep, or wake up cold in the early morning and pull the covers on and off until the alarm. A flat setting does not cause this, but it does not prevent it either.
How to build a better schedule on ecobee
ecobee's scheduling system is flexible enough to approximate a multi-phase night. Here is one approach.
- Create additional comfort settings. In the ecobee app, go to Comfort Settings and add two new ones. Name them something like "Deep Sleep" and "Pre-Wake." Set Deep Sleep to about 63–65°F and Pre-Wake to about 67–68°F. Keep the existing Sleep setting at around 66°F for the bedtime transition.
- Edit your schedule. In the Schedule screen, add transitions for each overnight phase. For example: Sleep at 10:30 p.m., Deep Sleep at 11:00 p.m., a second transition back to Sleep at 3:00 a.m. for the late-night phase, and Pre-Wake at 5:30 a.m.
- Choose sensors carefully. For overnight comfort settings, use only the bedroom sensor (if you have one) and disable the hallway or living room sensors. The bedroom temperature is what matters for sleep, not the house average.
The limits of doing it manually
This works, but it is rigid. If you go to bed at 11 instead of 10:30, the schedule has already transitioned without you. If you want to test whether 64°F or 63°F works better during deep sleep, you have to change the comfort setting, remember to track the results, and change it back if it does not help. After a few weeks most people stop adjusting and the schedule drifts from roughly right to roughly ignored.
