One of you kicks off the covers at midnight. The other pulls them tighter. A single thermostat setting all night forces a compromise that leaves both of you sleeping worse. Here is a smarter approach.

Why one number always fails

The typical couple fights over a single bedtime setpoint. One wants 66°F, the other wants 71°F. They settle on 68°F. Neither sleeps well.

The problem is not just the number — it is the assumption that one temperature works from 10pm to 7am. Your body needs different temperatures at different sleep stages:

  • Falling asleep. Core temperature drops. A slightly cool room helps.
  • Deep sleep (first half). Core temperature reaches its lowest point. A cooler room supports this.
  • Late night (second half). Core temperature starts rising. The room should warm slightly.
  • Pre-wake. Core temperature rises toward waking. A warmer room prevents that cold-room jolt.

This pattern is the same for hot sleepers and cold sleepers. The difference is the range: a hot sleeper might need 65–69°F across the night, while a cold sleeper might need 68–72°F. But both need the curve to go down and then come back up. The research behind the overnight curve.

How the curve helps both of you

When couples set a compromise flat temperature, the hot sleeper overheats during deep sleep (first half of the night) and the cold sleeper freezes before waking (second half). A curve addresses both:

  • The early-night dip gives the hot sleeper the cooling they need during the deep-sleep window, when overheating is most disruptive.
  • The late-night rise gives the cold sleeper the warmth they need in the hours when they are most likely to wake up cold.

A curve set to 67°F → 65°F → 68°F → 70°F often satisfies both partners better than a flat 68°F — because each half of the night is closer to what each person actually needs.

A starting point for couples

If you want to try this manually before using CircadiaOS, here is a reasonable starting curve for a couple where one runs hot and the other runs cold:

  1. Pre-sleep (bedtime): 68°F — a compromise both can live with for the first 30–60 minutes.
  2. Early night (deep sleep): 66°F — cooler than the cold sleeper prefers, but the deep-sleep window is when cooling matters most. The cold sleeper can use a heavier blanket during this phase.
  3. Late night: 69°F — warmer than the hot sleeper prefers, but by 3–4am the hot sleeper's core temperature has dropped and a slightly warmer room is less disruptive. The hot sleeper can use a lighter blanket or no top sheet.
  4. Pre-wake: 70°F — the cold sleeper wakes up comfortable instead of freezing. The hot sleeper is close to waking and can tolerate it.

Adjust from there. The exact numbers matter less than the shape: down, then up.

Other things that help

  • Separate blankets. This is the single most effective thing couples can do. Each person controls their own insulation layer independent of the room temperature. Common in Scandinavia for a reason.
  • Fan on the hot sleeper's side. Moving air over exposed skin accelerates evaporative cooling without changing the room temperature for the other person.
  • Breathable sheets, insulating duvet. Use cooling sheets (linen, bamboo, or percale) as the base, then let each person choose their own top layer — a light quilt for the hot sleeper, a down duvet for the cold sleeper.

Questions

What temperature should couples set their thermostat to for sleep?

There is no single number that works for both a hot sleeper and a cold sleeper all night. A curve that starts around 68°F, dips to 66°F for deep sleep, and rises to 69–70°F before waking tends to work better than any flat compromise.

Can CircadiaOS use both partners' wearable data?

CircadiaOS currently tunes the schedule from one wearable. If both partners wear trackers, choose the partner who is more sensitive to temperature. The overnight curve follows the same biological pattern for both, so tuning from one person's data still benefits both.

What if we have very different bedtimes?

Is separate blankets really that effective?

Yes. The room temperature affects both sleepers equally, but blankets are individual insulation. A cold sleeper under a down duvet in a 66°F room is warmer than a cold sleeper under a shared sheet in a 70°F room.
